Finishing the 10-day trip through Italy in Rome and the Vatican!
We left from Capri around 5pm and we drove to Pomegranate very slowly, because we hit a few bumps along the way. We returned the rental car at Termini train station and from there we took a uber around 11pm to our apartment that we booked through Booking, the Suite Spanish Apartment.
Our accommodation in Rome
This apartment is very spacious and VERY well located in Spanish Steps, but we had a problem with an air conditioning leak that caused a headache. I don't know if they've fixed it yet...
Day 1 – 06/04/2017 (Sunday)
Delicious breakfast
We woke up without rushing and went looking for a place to have breakfast nearby, as we were starving. We ended up going to Salt & Tobacco and we ordered some sandwiches, juices (with lots of ice to withstand the heat) and sweets so as not to stray from the country's tradition.
Walking in Rome
We left there and went for a walk around the city, which was packed with tourists even with the sun shining brightly. We passed by Spanish Steps (now calm down to take pictures), in Trevi Fountain, in the square where the Pantheon, in the Piazza Navona, node Castel Sant'Angelo and we went to the Vatican on foot. As this was not our first time in the city – read more about my first time here – , we didn't even bother going into the attractions, so it was just a casual stroll to take some family photos, you know?
If you want to know details about the main attractions in Rome, read on this post about my first time in the city with my husband.
Attractions we saw in Rome
This is the map with the attractions we saw in red:
Having lunch in Rome
When we left the Vatican, it was time to go back to the apartment so my brother could pack his things to travel. We said goodbye to him and then I went to have lunch with my father, but since most of the restaurants were closed because of the time, we ended up going to a very average one, Golden Juice.
We walked around the cute streets of the area for a while longer and then went back to our apartment to rest (pregnancy is tiring, right?). When we got hungry again, we went out to dinner with my brother's friend on a cute little street near Piazza Navona. Our restaurant had tasty food, but it wasn't anything special either: Ti Piacerá.
We returned to the hotel after a leisurely stroll around the city and fell asleep in bed.
Day 2 – 06/05/2017 (Monday)
We had breakfast at the apartment (we bought our things at a nearby supermarket the day before) and went straight out for a walk.
Hop on Hop off in Rome and Vatican
We chose to buy the type bus hop on hop off to walk around because the heat was killing and the city is huge, so right there in Piazza di Spagna, we talked to some vendors who are in the segways and we thought the best option for us was the company Green Line Tours.
There are routes to suit all tastes and budgets, but the one we took passed by the Vatican and cost 21 euros per person on a bus with an open second floor (I think it's better to get the wind in your face...lol).
We went around the city in the comfort of the bus and when it was 1 pm, we got off and went straight to the Vatican Museum.
Strolling through the Vatican
I bought tickets in advance at official museum website and when it was our turn, we went in. We walked around for a few hours inside, because my father hadn't been there yet, and despite it being crowded, it was worth seeing the beauties on display there again.
From there, we went to the St. Peter's Basilica and we waited in line for 1 hour until we could get in. What a fascinating place! Of course we blessed our baby there. <3
Dining in Rome
We then took the bus back to the Trevi Fountain and on the way to the apartment, we stopped for an early lunch/dinner at a really cool restaurant, Water Salad.
We returned to the apartment, packed our things, had some snacks closer to bedtime and slept our last night of the vacation together as a family.
06/06/2017 (Tuesday)
We had breakfast, got ready and went down to Piazza di Spagna to catch a shuttle to Fiumicino airport. The price is fixed (48 euros) and it's probably not the cheapest option, but it's a relief to know that the price won't change if there's traffic on the way, right? We gave ourselves this luxury and without any stress, we arrived there to check in, check in our bags and have a last meal together. The farewell was painful, but we'll have the memories forever.
This trip was SOOOO special <3
