Borgund Stavkirke, a medieval stave church

Index

Friday (08/07/2015)

As I was saying in post previous, I think the church of Borgund Stavkirke deserves to be highlighted, because it is simply WONDERFUL in every aspect. We drove for half an hour from our camping to this church and paid 160 crowns (18 euros) to visit it. I need to summarize the experience with the following: It is impressive!

Borgund

This wooden church (Stav Church) must have been built around 1150, that is, almost a thousand years ago, and it is believed to be the only one of its kind that has not been modified since its construction. (Did I mention that these medieval wooden churches only exist today in Norway, right?) It is impressive how well preserved it is and how many details are carved into its structure (dragons, snakes and crosses). Its interior is simple and has little light, but it is charming. Its smell is interesting, as is its ceiling, which resembles the bottom of a boat.

Oh, attention: nothing of flash inside! It's amazing how people don't read the signs with this restriction and just start taking one photo after another. I had a crazy urge to scream and break all those huge machines...

Now, some photos for you to fall in love with too:
