(This day trip to Águeda and Bairrada was part of a 9-day trip through the Center and North of Portugal. To learn more about this trip, read the article 9 days through the Center and North of Portugal)

Day 8 – Saturday (08/27/2022)

After checking out of our hotel in Douro and having lunch there, we drove for more than 1 hour to Agueda, the city known for its streets with colorful umbrellas, from the Umbrella Sky urban art project.

A quick tour

Since the kids were still asleep when we got there, we took turns walking around the city center and seeing these charming streets. It was extremely hot, but the umbrellas certainly helped a lot by keeping the streets shaded. I thought it was great to see these ordinary objects decorated in all sorts of ways, scattered around the streets. Look how cute:

Stay in Anadia

We then went to our accommodation, which is 30 minutes from Águeda, in a place called Anadia, and it was just in time for the children to wake up. We stayed at Alzira's House, which surprised us by being a completely renovated house on a huge plot of land, surrounded by old and simple houses. We were very well looked after by the lady who does everything there, we left our things in the rooms and went to enjoy the rest of the sun in the pool and then in the jacuzzi. It was so nice to enjoy the warm water with bubbles with the kids! It made me want to buy one. 🙂

Tasting the famous Bairrada style suckling pig

We went out to get ready for the last dinner of the trip, which was carefully chosen to end the trip with a flourish. My mother-in-law had read that we had to try the Bairrada style suckling pig, so after a lot of research and a few calls we decided to go for it King of Piglets. This family restaurant has been around since 1947, has several seals of quality recognition on the door and is the second oldest in the country in the sale of this delicacy, nationally and internationally recognized, the Leitão.

We tried to call to reserve a table, but they didn't accept reservations, so we ended up waiting in line for a while, but we managed to get a table on the terrace. The waiter who served us was super friendly, but he was responsible for all the tables on the terrace, so it was quite busy. We tried a wonderful Serra da Estrela cheese and the suckling pig was very tasty. I liked it, but Celo and my mother-in-law loved the delicacy, as well as the wine list that looked more like a bible!

We left there super late and 15 minutes later, we were arriving at our accommodation, where we slept really well. What a good bed!
