Troia, Comporta and the Carrasqueira Stilt Wharf

Index

(This post is the SECOND in the series of posts about the trip 9 days along the Costa Vicentina. The first is the Ferryboat from Setúbal to Troia)

Troy

When the ferry docked at the South Pier in Troia (#1 on the map), we got back in the car and decided to drive around the Troia Peninsula (#2), passing in front of some hotels, summer houses and residential buildings. We couldn't see the beaches while we were driving and we didn't even park to go and see them, but judging by the amount of people we saw walking around, it must be a very pleasant place.

I want to go back on a weekend outside of the high season to avoid the high prices (lol) – this is one of the most popular places in Portugal in the summer – and I'll tell you all about it later, OK?

We continued down the peninsula and when we were getting close to Comporta – #3 on the map and also our option 3 of the post previous – we started to see many cars stopped on the shoulders and several people taking unmarked trails to the famous Comporta Beach.

Comporta

This beach is huge and we even considered stopping the car and staying there for a few hours, but when we looked in the back seat, the little cutie had fallen asleep and we thought it best to continue on our way.

We passed through the cute village of Comporta and we went on to meet the Carrasqueira Stilt Pier (#4 on the map above), a place considered unmissable by some blogs (I have my doubts…)

Carrasqueira Stilt Pier

This pier is currently the the only one of its kind in Europe and was built in the 50s/60s with irregular wooden piles. It allows fishermen access to their boats when the level of the Sado River is very low and some people manage to take wonderful photos during sunrise and sunset (see some on Pinterest).

Since I went in the middle of the day and I don't use filters or special cameras, mine looked like this:

A little disappointing, I admit, but I understand the importance for the fishing industry in the region. Thank God Paddy stayed asleep and didn't want to walk around there... lol. Can you imagine?

We continued our journey to our hotel in Praia da Luz and I told everything in this post.
